About Aldinga Reef Aquatic Reserve

Aldinga Reef Aquatic Reserve is located off the southern coast of the Fleurieu Peninsula near the town of Aldinga Beach in South Australia. Established to protect the unique marine environment, the reserve features extensive rocky reefs, sandy seafloor areas, and seagrass beds, providing habitat for a wide variety of marine flora and fauna. The reserve encompasses coastal waters around Aldinga Reef, which is an extensive reef system that supports diverse fish species, invertebrates, and seaweed communities. Due to its relatively shallow depth, clear waters, and abundant marine life, the reserve is a popular destination for snorkeling, diving, and underwater photography. Visitors can explore underwater rock formations and observe species such as rock lobsters, abalone, and native fish that are important both ecologically and commercially. Fishing and marine collecting are restricted or regulated to conserve the ecosystem. On land, the nearby Aldinga Scrub Conservation Park offers complementary terrestrial habitats with native plants and birdlife. Visitors appreciate the reserve for its natural beauty, educational opportunities, and as a place to experience healthy South Australian coastal marine biodiversity. The reserve also supports marine research and conservation initiatives aimed at preserving the ecological integrity of this coastal environment.
